Texas is a state that has birthed many of indie rock’s most innovative and subtle acts, and Houston newcomers The Manichean are no exception. Combining chaotic, sinister math rock with subtle, airy atmospherics and a few quirks all their own, The Manichean manages to create a sound that is both challenging and nostalgic.
Powerful, yet agile, drums cut in and out as sweeping oceans of acoustic and electric guitars permeate the track, all anchored down by melodic and rhythmically complex bass. The addition of horns, keyboards, folksy violin, and samples that sound like they came straight from the hands of Johnny Greenwood add an excellent extra dimension that truly separates The Manichean from the rest of the pack.
Let’s just put it this way: Punk rock has never had so much soul.
